German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel offered his condolences to the victims' families of Friday's deadly shooting in Munich's Olympia shopping mall and thanked the security forces for their quick response, while talking to journalists in Berlin on Saturday.
"At the moment we have nothing left to do but mourn what happened and offer compassion to the relatives," said Gabriel, while ruling out a terroristic background behind the incident. "After what happened in Nice and the attacks in France we must be worried after an incident like yesterday's that it has a terroristic background, which is not the case thank god. We discovered that in the course of the investigation. Germany's security forces are of course very strained. And the same counts for entire Europe these days," added the German chancellor's deputy.
Despite reports of more shooters involved, local police have said that the attack was carried out by a lone gunman who then killed himself. Sixteen people were also injured in the assault, three of them critically. Police are still investigating the motive behind the shooting.
The suspect was identified as an 18-year-old German-Iranian dual national who was a resident of Munich.
