The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has reached a compromise on a bill that would allow Congress to reject or approve a nuclear deal with Iran — if Republican members withhold amendments that could upset the fragile congressional agreement.
After breakneck negotiations over the past week, coordinated by Chairman Republican Senator Bob Corker and ranking member Democratic Senator Ben Cardin, the panel is expected to approve the bill Tuesday afternoon with a bipartisan majority.
A show of strong support in committee likely paves the way for a veto-proof majority for the measure, which would temporarily block President Barack Obama from lifting legislative sanctions on Iran while Congress reviews the bill.
Indeed, not long after the deal began circulating White House press secretary Josh Earnest announced a major position shift: The president would accept the deal if no extraneous amendments were added.
