Nine people are dead after a shooting Wednesday night at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, in an attack officials describe as a "hate crime."
The pastor of the the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church, a popular State Senator, was among the victims.
Clementa Pinckney, 41, is a well-known leader in the community and civil rights advocate.
The police have yet to formally confirm the identity of the other victims, but Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said six women and three men were killed. I have ever witnessed in my life."
