The sunshine state of Florida famous for producing orange juice has a dark side when it comes to the treatment of immigrant labour but workers are beginning to speak out, Monday. Conditions for those working on the fruit farms led one woman to break down when recounting how she was treated. Another woman reports an even more worrying issue: that of sexual assault. Elvira Carvajal of the Farmworker Association of Florida estimates that as many as 80 per cent of female workers are assaulted on the fruit farms. Part of the problem is that many people on the farms are illegal immigrants and so are unable to go to the police or the authorities to report wrong-doing. That leaves them in a vicious circle of either being deported or enduring whatever treatment is thrown at them.
