Russia: Lavrov slams US allegations that Russia supplied weapons to Taliban

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov blasted suggestions made by US officials that Russia had supplied arms to the Taliban as not only "unacceptable," but as an attempt to divert attention from the Syrian peace settlement. The statement was made during a joint press conference with OSCE Secretary General, Lamberto Zannier, in Moscow on Tuesday.
Lavrov went on to say that he believes such statements could be “an attempt to divert attention from some plans for a change in the course of the Syrian settlement," which he elaborated as being “a shift to the old theme of regime change.”
The Russian diplomat went on to stress the necessity to unite efforts and to "help the Afghans to build their dialogue on national reconciliation on the basis of the criteria set forth in the UN Security Council Resolution."
However, Lavrov noted that US representatives had decided to skip the discussions on the Afghan issue during the International Afghanistan Peace Conference held in Moscow in mid-April, saying that "their Afghan policy was being formed at the moment."
On Monday, the general in charge of US forces in Afghanistan, John Nicholson, said he was "not refuting" claims that Russia had provided weapons to the Taliban.
