Ukraine: Court examines constitutionality of removing Yanukovych's presidential title

2 19.10.2016 Инфо

The Constitutional Court of Ukraine began proceedings in Kiev on Wednesday to determine the constitutionality of a law that strips former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych of his presidential title.
Last year, political opponents of Yanukovich including Yulia Tymoshenko and Oleg Lyashko created a bill to have Yanukovich divested of his title as president. In February 2015, Verkhovna Rada MPs voted in favour of the proposal. However, according to Ukrainian law, the presidential status is held for the lifetime of the president, unless he or she was impeached.
Current Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko appealed to the Constitutional Court to have the law struck down as unconstitutional. Poroshenko says the law violates at least five articles of the Ukrainian constitution, and that in any case parliament does not have the power to strip a former president of their title. If the court finds the divestment unconstitutional, Viktor Yanukovich will have his presidential status reinstated.
