German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave her backing to her CDU (Christian Democratic Union) politician Reiner Haseloff in the 2016 Saxony Anhalt state elections at a rally in the town of Halle, Friday evening. While addressing to CDU supporters, Merkel also commented on the alleged sexual assaults in Cologne on New Year's Eve, the ongoing refugee crisis and possible solutions to it.
Speaking on the Cologne events, Merkel stated that 'when somebody is a criminal in Germany, it doesn't matter whether he attacks a refugee shelter, whether he is a migrant who has been living here for long, whether he is a German or a refugee who has just arrived here several weeks ago, criminals will be punished." "It is useless to conceal things, otherwise the integration and living together won't work out for us," she added.
Merkel confirmed that "the number of arriving refugees has significantly reduced" while "we are working on the European solution." She went on to say that the European Union "needs to implement the deal with Turkey," while fighting against causes which make people flee directly in these places where they come from." "We need to provide more development aid, support, food, and schooling for the kids in Jordan, Lebanon and now in Turkey," she noted.
