Ukraine: Ex-Georgian Pres. Saakashvili resigns as Odessa Governor

Mikheil Saakashvili resigned from his post as Governor of the Odessa Region, Monday, citing widespread “banditry and lawlessness” during an address from Odessa.
Saakashvili, the former Georgian President, said “Odessa will only develop once Kiev is free of these corrupt politicians,” adding that “that is why I made the decision to resign and start a new phase of the struggle. I will not give up, and I will not get tired, let them have no hope.”
The former governor said that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko personally supports “two clans” in Odessa. According to Saakashvili, one is “a bandit and a criminal clan [made] of killers from the 90s,” reportedly led by Odessa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov, and the other, an 'Ismail corruption clan’, allegedly headed by Odessa regional council chairman Anatoliy Urbansky.
Saakashvili asked “what difference does it make to the Ukrainian people who brings them down, who is going to rob them, whether it is Poroshenko or Yanukovych?”
Poroshenko said he is ready to accept Saakashvili’s resignation as soon as the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine submit the motion.
The resignation marks an end to Saakashvili’s eventful 18-months as governor where he took Ukrainian citizenship after being a vocal Euromaidan supporter.
