Former president of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, told the Les Republicains party's National Council of his plans to quit as head of the organisation, setting up a potential bid for the presidency, in Paris on Saturday.
“This National Council will be my last one as Les Republicains president,” stated Sarkozy, setting up the conditions for a presidential bid, though falling short of announcing his candidacy.
The former president took the opportunity to attack the Front National and its leader Marine Le Pen. "I do not accept the way that Marine Le Pen talks about these people [migrants], because they are humans and regardless of the colour of their skin, regardless of their history, they are our brothers in humanity,” said Sarkozy.
The former President of France went on to speak about Brexit, claiming it to be an opportunity for the party: "we are the Republicans so we have to make the sense of this worry and take this opportunity to strengthen Europe and remake it."
