At least six people were reportedly killed in confrontation with Nigerian police in Abuja on Monday, during protests of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) demanding the release of their imprisoned leader, Shia Muslim Cleric Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife.
Footage shows police officers removing a dead body from the road and putting it on the back of a truck, and then leaving with two dead bodies. Fires can also be seen on the streets.
According to reports, police fired live ammunition and tear gas canisters while protesters marched in the capital. In retaliation, the demonstrators threw petrol bombs, setting a local fire station on fire.
Ibrahim Zakzaky has been in detention since 2015, following huge protests in Zaria, during which at least 348 civilians, including Zakzaky's three sons, were reportedly killed by the Nigerian Army.
