Kiev-born pianist Valentina Lisitsa played a concert in Donetsk on Monday, on the 74th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War. Lisitsa played on a stage in close proximity to the Donbass Liberators Memorial in Lenin Komsomol park. The commemorative day marks the beginning of Operation Barbarossa that saw Nazi forces invade the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian-born pianist has courted controversy over her vocal support for anti-Kiev forces operating in East Ukraine. Her performance at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra was cancelled in April.
