Staying in the government, as it is known, led to the Five Star Movement losing consensus and it is obvious that to protect the Five Star Movement the most convenient strategy for us would be to go to the ballots. We were tempted over the past days to disengage the Five Star Movement from any future government to avoid sacrificing any more of our consensus. But it is also true that the Italian citizens voted for us on May 4 2018 to change Italy, not the Five Star Movement. I also think that not those who run away are courageous but those who try until the end to change things."

The League Party leader Matteo Salvini reiterated his call for fresh parliamentary elections at a meeting with Italian president Sergio Mattarella in Rome on Thursday.
"The election is what would give a word to our employers, the Italian citizens. If someone tells me: 'Let's talk so that NOs become YES'. Let's improve the team. Let's improve the program. Let's set a rhythm and an objective not against but for... I always said that I am a concrete man, therefore I do not hold grudges," said Salvini adding that forming a coalition would be a waste of time.
Five Star Movement (M5S) leader Luigi Di Maio said he would prefer a 'solid majority' coalition in the government. "I also think that not those who run away are courageous but those who try until the end to change things," said Di Maio.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella met with Italy's main party leaders to explore opportunities to form a new cabinet after prime minister Giuseppe Conte resigned on Tuesday.
