Iraq: Shia militias launch anti-IS offensive west of Mosul

Shia militias, spearheaded by the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), began their offensive against the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) just west of Mosul, Saturday morning.
Armoured vehicles and bulldozers could be seen moving towards the city of Tal Afar, some 78km (49m) west of Mosul.
Last week, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the start of the military operation to liberate the country's second largest city. IS captured Mosul in 2014 and the offensive is now fronted by the Iraqi army, Kurdish and Shia militias, and the US-led anti-IS coalition.
Mosul is the last major city in Iraq under IS control, and with the army and militias working towards its recapture by liberating nearby towns and cutting off supply routes to the militants who remain in the city.
