Scuffles broke out as animal-rights protesters faced off against bull-fighting enthusiasts in the Castilian town of Tordesillas, Tuesday, as thousands came out to decry the alleged cruelty involved in the settlement’s annual bull fighting festival Toro de la Vega. The massive counter demonstration to the event was organised by the pro-animal rights group Animalist Party Against Mistreatment of Animals (PACMA), hurling abuse at participants of the competition as they marched through Tordesillas on horseback carrying spears. Tensions erupted both during the bull-run and the demonstration, with locals seen fleeing from the path laid out for the bull in tears. As horse-riders and supporters made their way through the demonstration, scuffles and arguments broke out between those in favour and those against the event. The Toro de la Vega festival is special in that it lets bulls run through the town, with locals and visiting dare-devils chasing down the animal, many trying to lance it with large spears. The winner of the contest is the person who lands the killing blow on the bull. PACMA has constantly petitioned against the festival for 10 years, presenting a document to the Petitions Committee of the European Commission on September 11 in 2014 which gained more than 70,000 signatures. This year, the group have considered implementing a legal team criticising irregularities in the event's security protocol, saying that spectators were put in danger due to minimal policing.
