David Fry, one of seven armed militia fighters who had occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, was released after being found not guilt of conspiracy, in Portland, Oregon on Friday.
Around a dozen people were waiting outside the building, chanting "What do we want? David Fry. When do we want him? Now!", while waving US flags or holding up placards. The supporters started cheering and clapping when Fry emerged from the building. He briefly spoke to the crowd before he was ushered away to a waiting vehicle.
Fry together with six other people was accused of conspiring to prevent federal employees from doing their jobs, after they staged a 41 day armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters at the beginning of the year. Anti-government militia leader Ammon Bundy, his brother Ryan, and the other defendants were found not guilty earlier, Fry was the last one to be released.
In January the group seized the government building in protest, stating unfair treatment of two Oregon prisoners in an arson case, as their initial reason. However they also wanted to protest against what they consider to be government tyranny. One protester was shot during a standoff with the police and the wildlife refuge reportedly suffered damages.
