Commanders and personnel from several countries including the US and Chile gathered at the Maritime Museum in Valparaiso on Monday to mark the start of the UNITAS naval exercises.
Hosted by Chile, the training focuses on learning "as a unit and a joint group to be able to operate in and exercise together," according to Captain Thomas Myers of the US Navy.
UNITAS Pacific 2019 brings together warships, personal and aircraft from a number of nations to train and learn to "act jointly and in coordination to interoperate as a single force in pursuit of a common goal," according to Yerko Marcic Conley, Rear Admiral of the Chilean Navy.
UNITAS Pacific 2019 takes place from 23 June to 3 July, the US Southern Command wrote in a press release. Maritime forces from Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Germany, Honduras, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Turkey, and the United Kingdom join their counterparts from the US and Chile, in taking part in the drills.
