Paris Prosecutor Remy Heitz updated the press regarding the manhunt that led to the death of the Christmas market attacker in the district Neudorf, speaking from Strasbourg on Friday.
During a "big operation" in the district of Neudorf, a police car detected a "man fitting the suspect’s description walking in Lazaret Street” who then took hid inside a building and opened fire at police officers using "a weapon similar to the one used on Tuesday night," as a response "the officers then fired back with multiple shots killing the assailant," said Heitz.
Following the exchange of fire that led to the suspect’s death, the police found an old revolver, a knife and eight more types of ammunition on him.
"At this stage, seven people are still in custody, four are members of his family detained Tuesday night, and three more people of his close circle," Heitz concluded.
According to the prosecutor three people are dead while a fourth one "has been declared brain-dead." Twelve people have been injured with one still in a critical state.
The attack, which occurred near one of the city's famous Christmas markets, happened shortly before 20:00 CEST (19:00 GMT) on Tuesday and left three people dead and a dozen more injured.
The suspect was named by police as 29-year-old Strasbourg native Cherif Chekatt, who reportedly has an extensive criminal record and was on a French government watch list of people who potentially represent threats to national security.
