Peshmerga and Iraqi forces launched a fresh offensive on Mosul near the village of Tal Shelefa, Saturday, as armed forces engaged in a sixth day of operations to retake the city of Mosul from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; ISIS/ISIL).
Forces of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; ISIS/ISIL) continue to occupy nearby villages, while improvised explosive devices hamper the army's progress. Iraqi security forces reportedly took control of Tel Al-Samen and are now turning their attention to recapturing the nearby Hammam al-Alil.
Last week, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the start of the military operation to liberate the country's second largest city. IS captured Mosul in 2014 and the offensive is now spearheaded by the Iraqi army and Kurdish militia, supported by the coalition led by the United States.
Mosul is the last major city in Iraq under the control of IS, and the army has been working towards its recapture by liberating nearby towns and cutting off supply routes to the militants who remain in the city.
