NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that the alliance “plans to establish two more NATO force integration units in Hungary and Slovakia,” during a press conference in Brussels on Thursday. Stoltenberg added that these new bases were “essential to enhance our ability, to reinforce allies in the east quickly and effectively if needed.” The general secretary also announced that NATO’s “biggest and most ambitious” exercise “in more than a decade” will take place in the Atlantic Sea and the Mediterranean Ocean in late October. It is set to involve “more than 30,000 troops from more than 30 nations,” Stoltenberg added. Responding to a question from journalist James Hirst on the value of potentially inflaming tensions with Russia by deploying troops in the Baltics, Stoltenberg said NATO has to "respond when we see a more assertive Russia, behaving the way it has behaved over the last period.” The defence ministers of all 28 member states of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) have gathered for a meeting in Brussels on Thursday that Stoltenberg will head. The fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Russia's air strikes in Syria are expected to be high on the agenda.
