A Long Walk to Freedom: Fight for Racial Equality Continues

Over the last year, cities across the United States have erupted in protest against police brutality and racism.
Enabled in part by the organizing power of social media, the #BlackLivesMatter movement rapidly coalesced following the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York. After grand juries in both cases declined to indict the police officers responsible, the number and scope of demonstrations increased.
The protests were not just cathartic demonstrations of grief and anger, but efforts to bring the pain experienced by communities of color every day into the consciousness of mainstream America.
