A ceremony for Turkey's first nuclear power plant was disturbed when anti-nuclear protesters blocked the gates of the nuclear facility and locked in several of the ceremony's guests in the Akkuyu district of Turkey's southern Mersin province, Tuesday. The environmentalists from Mersin's Gulnar neighbourhood carried large banners comparing the site to Japan's Fukushima plant and banged on the iron gates of the facility. Police used a water cannon to disperse the crowd. The Akkuyu power plant is planned to have a life time of 60 years at a cost of around $22 billion (€20.62 billion).
