25.04.2015
Around 10,000 Australians and New Zealanders gathered at the Anzac Cove, on the shores of the Gallipoli peninsula late Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday to honour the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) who died on the frontlines during the First World War. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of New Zealand John Key, Prince Harry and Prince Charles, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Irish President Michael Higgins, among other dignitaries were in attendance. Abbott, Key and Army officers laid commemorative wreaths during the ceremony, which finished with the Last Post being played. Approximately 58,000 Allied troops, among which 11,000 were Australians and New Zealanders, were killed in the bloody eight-month attempt to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. Approximately 87,000 Ottoman Turkish troops also passed away, trying to protect the narrow peninsula. At least 300,000 people from both sides were seriously wounded.
