Speaking on the sidelines of the International Parliamentary Forum, French Front National MP Marion Le Pen declared that "the threat to France is not Bashar al-Assad but clearly the Islamic State", in Moscow, Thursday. Marion, the grandaughter of Front National founder Jean Le Pen, went on to say that she wants to "thank the Russians, who once again, are doing the job that the French government hasn't been brave enough to do". Le Pen's comments follow Russia's decision to begin airstrikes in Syria in co-operation with the Assad government on Wednesday. On Thursday, more attacks hit militant targets in Maarrat al-Nu'man and al-Latamna. Prior to the strikes Russia's Federation Council gave its consent for the use of the Russian armed forces abroad at a closed-doors meeting. The move followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's UN General Assembly speech in which he called for an alliance against IS.
