Protesters were seen pinned to the ground by people in plain clothes, with police officers seen present in mass in Mongkok area in Hong Kong, Thursday.
People gathered to take part in a vigil to mark the 31st anniversary of the crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protests, despite a police ban that cited coronavirus measures.
Candles were lit to commemorate the victims of the 1989 crackdown, in a gathering that fell under social distancing restrictions still in place amid the coronavirus pandemic and in light of tensions sparked following the adoption by China of a national security law for the territory.
The Tiananmen Square student-led demonstrations occurred in 1989 in Beijing and were suppressed on June 4 when the Chinese government used military force, killing and injuring hundreds of unarmed protesters.
