Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he was surprised that Germany was following “a Russophobic minority demanding to place politics above the economy in its relations with Moscow,” making the statement during a meeting of the Association of European Businesses in Moscow, Tuesday.
He went on to say that the “review of relations with Russia at the meeting of the European Council last week showed that the EU is still not ready to develop a pragmatic line.”
The diplomat also highlighted Russia and Turkey’s signing of “an agreement on the Turkish Stream gas pipeline in the direction of Europe, in particular Greece.” He said Moscow was “ready to extend the pipeline to the territory of the European Union upon receiving on paper official, explicit guarantees of the implementation of this project.”
At the EU summit last week in Brussels, European leaders decided not to adopt any additional sanctions against Russia following a dispute between the West and Moscow over the status of al-Nusra Front in Syria. Some leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President of the European Council Donald Tusk, have reportedly sought to leave the issue on the agenda.
