Rosatom's first deputy CEO for Corporate Development and International Business Kirill Komarov and director general of the World Nuclear Association Agneta Rising, spoke about the potential role of nuclear energy at the COP22 in Marrakesh on Thursday.
Both said they believed the nuclear industry could play an important role in reducing the level of CO2 emissions. Rising stated that nuclear energy was "one of the best energy sources" and added that the nuclear industry would have the capacity to provide 25 percent of the world's electricity by 2050. She also said that "nuclear must also be treated equally in the instruments that will be put in place to enact the Paris Agreements."
Komarov offered a similar point of view stating that "nuclear energy and renewable energy sources are not competitive [against one another]" or "mutual[ly] exclusive" and that each had its own advantages and limitations.
The conference, which ends on Friday, oversees the start of the implementation of the Paris Agreement, a deal aimed at reducing global-warming emissions. Some 180 countries, including China and the US, have signed the agreement, but at this stage, only 110 have ratified it.
