UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura stressed that with the Russia-Turkey deal over Idlib "there is no reason not to move forward expeditiously with the political process," during a UN Security Council in New York City on Tuesday.
Russian representative Vasily Alekseevich Nebenzya, however, told Mistura to "facilitate but not to lead the process." He added "The Syrian decisions need to be owned by the Syrian people themselves as is stipulated in Resolution 2254."
"If Russia is interested in bringing peace to Syria, it should make sure Iran and its militias leave Syria once and for all. The risk of a broader conflict will leave with them," US representative James Jeffrey stated.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Monday that Russia and Turkey have agreed to establish a demilitarised zone in Idlib by 15 October, along the contact line of the armed opposition and the Syrian army.
