German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticised a proposal put forward by the Greens to ban all diesel cars by 2030, during a campaign rally to support her fellow CDU member and Minister-President of the Saarland Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, in St Wendel, The Saarland, on Thursday.
Merkel said, "We have called on many many people to say, 'Of course you can buy the car that you want, but when you want to buy a diesel car then buy one that is environmentally friendly.'"
She called the proposal by the Greens and some members of the SPD "perfidious", saying "The Greens and also for some of the Social Democrats to now want to make it - because one company didn't follow the rules - that everything that we said to people before is false. It isn't false."
The Greens have said that, in an effort to drastically cut emissions, they want to make sure that, as of 2030, no new car is authorised with an internal combustion engine.
