17.06.2016
Reinhold Hanning, a 94-year-old former SS sergeant who served as an Auschwitz guard, was convicted of participating in the murder of at least 170,000 after his trial in Detmold on Friday.
Hanning was sentenced to five years in jail for facilitating the slaughter at the Auschwitz extermination camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. Nevertheless, he will remain free while any appeals are heard. It is likely to be one of Germany's last Holocaust trials.
Auschwitz concentration camp was a network of German Nazi concentration and extermination camps built and operated by the Third Reich in Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany during World War II. At least 1.1 million prisoners died at Auschwitz until the camp was liberated by the Soviet Red Army in 1945.
