Hungarian police used tear gas, pepper spray and water cannon to disperse refugees at the Horgos 2 border crossing, Wednesday, after migrants reportedly tried to pass through the border gates. Hungarian law enforcement unleashed water cannons on the migrants after several protesters from the largely peaceful crowd threw bottles of water and sticks at the police. Several of the refugees were severely injured following the assault. After Serbian emergency services arrived on the scene to help the injured, protesters chanted "Open the border" and "Thank you Serbia." Buses and taxis are reportedly taking those willing to continue their trip to EU via Croatia, only 500 metres from where the altercations are taking place, after Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic promised to help refugees reach Western Europe. Milanovic has denounced Hungary's border policy and use of a razor wire fence as a "terrible message" to Europe. Responding to Hungary's border control, Serbia has stated its "harshest possible protest" against Budapest's policing tactics at their southern frontier. On Monday, Hungarian military vehicles arrived in Roszke and soldiers were deployed to guard the border. A razor wire fence was also erected along the border with Serbia. Prime Minister Viktor Orban told Hungary's TV2 station that a state of emergency was 'likely' to be introduced along the Hungary-Serbia border.
