Pro-Palestinian demonstrators rallied outside the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) building, protesting against its decision to host the Israeli-funded Seret film festival in London, Thursday. BAFTA is hosting the gala opening night of the festival, which will be taking place from June 11 to 21, at their building next to Piccadilly Circus in London. Other cities besides the capital, such as Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool, will be screening the Israeli films, including two made by ultra-orthodox Jews from the Haredi community. A collective of more than 40 artists and film-makers including Ken Loach, Mike Leigh and Peter Kosminsky sent a letter on June 8 asking the cinemas to drop the screenings. The letter argued that the festival is co-sponsored by the Israeli government and that "by benefiting from money from the Israeli state, the cinemas become silent accomplices to the violence inflicted on the Palestinian people."
