The United States is to again delay its military withdrawal from Afghanistan, US President Barack Obama announced during a press conference in the White House in Washington D.C. on Thursday. US forces, which currently number 9800 troops, will remain in the country throughout most of 2016 under the revised plans, before dropping to around 5500 at the end of the year or early 2017. "I've decided to maintain our current posture of 9800 troops in Afghanistan through most of next year, 2016," Obama said, adding that "their mission will not change. Our troops will continue to pursue those two narrow tasks that I outlined earlier: training Afghan forces and going after al-Qaeda."
