Hundreds flooded the streets of Ankara on Saturday, after the government announced that the first stage of an attempted military coup had been defeated.
Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim announced earlier in the day that the first stage of the coup was over. So far a total of 1,563 people have been detained over the charges of attempting a coup, according to local media. Among them are high ranking officers; four generals and 29 colonels.
On Friday evening, a faction within the Turkish military announced that it was seizing power "to protect the democratic order and to maintain human rights." Airports in Istanbul were closed overnight, military forces blocked traffic on several Istanbul's bridges and military jets flew low over Turkey's largest city.
In Ankara, the Turkish parliament was attacked along with the presidential palace, with both buildings being attacked from the air, while, also in the city, an F-16 jet also reportedly shot down a military helicopter and gunfire broke out around the Interior Ministry.
Turkish government officials have announced that at least 190 people have been killed, more than 1,500 people wounded and almost 3,000 military personnel detained since the coup started.
