France: Riot police rife as Ethiopian 'Jungle' inhabitants protest during eviction

24.10.2016
Dozens of Oromo Ethiopian refugees living in the Calais refugee camp, nicknamed the 'Jungle,' protested against the regime they have left behind on Monday, the same day as evictions from the camp began.
The protesters marched to the camp headquarters chanting and making crossed arm signs, the protest symbol of the Oromo struggle, publicised by Ethiopian marathon runner Feyisa Lilesa at the summer Olympic Games.
People from Oromia have accused the state of seizing their land and offering paltry compensation before selling it on at inflated prices. There have allegedly been violent, often lethal crackdowns on Oromo protests in Ethiopia. Despite their reported oppression in Ethiopia, the protesters fear that they will not be granted asylum in France as it does not recognise them as a persecuted minority.
The protesters, along with the rest of the 10,000 refugees at migrants in the camp are being evicted over a three day period following French President Francois Hollande's dismantling order.
