SOT, Lieke Martens, Dutch footballer: "When I was young, I had only men football heroes, I didn't even know many women football players. Actually when I was maybe 12, I started to know Marta [Vieira da Silva] and she was really good and she is still playing now so that's amazing. I've played with her but many heroes in women football I didn't have because they did not exist at that time but now times have changed and you see that we are role models for them now."

SOT, Lieke Martens, Dutch footballer: "I just want to tell them to enjoy every single moment of what they do, that they have to practise and they have to continue and work hard and with talent you only can come there, you have to work really hard to come to the top."

SOT, Lieke Martens, Dutch footballer: "Cruyff is a very important person in football in Holland, of course I have seen him on YouTube becasue I couldn't see him play when I was young but of course he was an amazing football player, he did many good things for our football, not only in Holland but all over the world. He is like a hero everywhere. Of course I think he is a role model for everyone but I don't want to compare myself with Cruyff, that's totally different."

Despite channelling her inner Johan Cruyff in their 1:0 victory against New Zealand in their first group match, Netherlands's Lieke Martens did not want to compare herself with the Dutch football legend. The Dutch forward made the remarks during an interview prior to the Dutch squad training in Reims on Tuesday.
"He is like a hero everywhere. Of course I think he is a role model for everyone but I don't want to compare myself with Cruyff," said Lieke whose perfect execution of the signature Cruyff Turn had left viewers gobsmacked.
Martens also stressed the need for girls to work hard "to come to the top."
"They have to practise and they have to continue and work hard and with talent you only can come there," said the Dutch star.
Martens was named FIFA's best player in 2017 and scored the first ever FIFA Women's World Cup goal for the Netherlands in the team's first match at the 2015 World Cup tournament.
