Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry spoke about North Korea's nuclear program at a press conference in Geneva on Friday, following their announcement that the two countries had agreed on a new Syrian ceasefire plan.
The Foreign Minister explained that both Russia and the US had made "a joint statement expressing our opposition to the actions that violate the resolution of the UN Security Council." He added that "the current situation shows that the diplomats probably have to be more creative than just responding with sanctions."
The Secretary of State stated that the US had "made overtures after overtures to the dictator of North Korea" and that they had "made it very clear to him [Kim Jong-un] that we are prepared to talk about peace".
This was premised, however, on the condition that Kim Jong-un discusses de-nuclearisation. Kerry concluded that despite this, the dictator had "refused to do that again and again." He re-affirmed the US's commitment to talks, saying that "we are prepared to go back right away. All Kim Jong-un has to do is say 'I'm prepared to talk about de-nuclearisation.
North Korea's capital confirmed that nuclear tests had been carried out on a northeastern test site, which is estimated as the country's the fifth experiment since it began its nuclear program.
