Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the military to "take comprehensive measures to prepare a symmetrical response" to the United States' test of a missile previously banned by the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, speaking in Moscow on Friday at a meeting with his Security Council.
"Bearing in mind the new circumstances, I instruct the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant departments to analyse the level of threat posed by the actions of the United States for our country and to take comprehensive measures to prepare a symmetrical response," said Putin.
The Russian leader added that Moscow stays ready for "constructive dialogue" with Washington.
The US military carried out a cruise missile test on August 18 in what is thought to be the first such launch since Washington's withdrawal from the INF Treaty.
