India: Countdown begins for India's first observatory

The 50-hour countdown for the launch of India's ASTROSAT mission began at the Sriharikota Range of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) near Sullurupeta, Sunday - one day ahead of its launch on Monday 28. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C30) is scheduled to take off from First Launch Pad on a mission to deliver India's first Astrosat space observatory satellite into a 650 km (403 miles) orbit. Along with 1513 kg (3,335 lbs) heavy Astrosat, the spacecraft will carry six other international satellites including Indonesian surveillance satellite LAPAN-A2; Canadian maritime monitoring Nanosatellite NLS-14, and four American non-visual remote sensing LEMUR satellites. The total weight of PLSV-C30 amounts 1,631 kg (3,595 lbs).
