President of the European Council Donald Tusk stated that excluding Greece from the open-border Schengen area will not solve the refugee crisis, during a press conference following a meeting with the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Athens, Tuesday.
Tusk urged Greece and its EU partners to "improve the protection of our external borders" and reiterated that "excluding Greece from Schengen solves none of our problems."
The EC President highlighted that "Greece is among the most affected countries" by the refugee crisis. "It is no coincidence that the Greek citizens on the islands have been nominated to the Nobel Peace Prize for their generosity in helping people in need" he added.
Commenting on the Syrian crisis and its effects on the migration issue, Tusk stated: "The whole world is hoping for peace and is ready for talks." However, "the Russian bombing in Syria leaves us with little hope" he said. Tusk then claimed that the Russian bombing has strengthened the "Assad regime" which has resulted in Europe being "flooded with new waves of refugees."
