Indian Olympic wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt has said he would reject an upgrade from his bronze medal upgraded, as the International Olympics Committee debates whether to strip deceased Russian wrestler Besik Kudukhov of his silver medal. Dutt discussed his decision from Madhuban Town in Panipat, Friday.
Following a successful career in wrestling, Russian Besik Kudukhov died tragically in a car accident at the age of 27 in 2013. A recent doping counter-check, part of the IOC's move to crackdown on condition enhancing drugs, allegedly discovered forbidden substances in the wrestler's tests. Several media outlets reported that because of the results, he could be posthumously deprived of the silver medal, which he won in the London Olympics 2012. The medal would automatically be presented to Dutt, the runner up, who lost to Kudukhov in the pre-quarterfinal bout in the 60kg category.
However, the wrestler said that he thinks that "the medal should be with Kudukhov's mother and wife, so they can remember him."
Russian officials commented have also commented on the potential International Olympic Committee (IOC) decision to strip Kudukhov of the medal as well, calling the possible decision 'unfair'.
