UN: Antonio Guterres elected as next UN Secretary General - Churkin

Antonio Guterres was "the best candidate available" the United Nations (UN) Security Council President and Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vitali Churkin, stated at the UN headquarters in New York, Thursday, speaking of the appointment of the new UN Secretary General.
Churkin said that it had been "a fair process," in which women were presented in equal numbers "from the outset to the last straw poll," but in the end it was agreed that Guterres was the right candidate for the position.
The former Portuguese Prime Minister and High Commissioner for Refugees was elected unanimously by the Security Council. He will serve as UN Secretary General from January 1, 2017, until December 31, 2021.
