Russia: Gas price for Ukraine should compare with regional prices says Putin

The price for Russian gas for Ukraine should correspond to the prices in its neighbouring countries, said Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller in Moscow on Wednesday. During the meeting, Putin spoke of the importance of conveying "confidence in our intentions to keep normal business relations" with Ukraine. The Russian President elaborated that Russia had never used "economic ties" as a means to "pressure" Ukraine and that its gas delivery to all the consumers including southeast Ukraine, should remain "uninterrupted". Putin supported Miller's suggestion to favour Ukraine's bid to extend the regime of not penalising Kiev according to the "take or pay" mechanism, which had been fixed in the acting 2009 gas contract. Last week Ukraine's Naftogaz signed a short-term agreement with Russia's Gazprom to buy gas at the price of $248 (€230) per 1,000 cubic metres. The agreement is expected to last for three months and represents a 25 percent discount on the price for the first quarter.
