A group of east African refugees paddled across the River Ill using an inflatable raft in between the Palace of Europe and the European Parliament, Strasbourg, Wednesday. The protest was organised against the European Union’s response to the Mediterranean migrant crisis. A protester, who didn’t give his name, stated that immigrants in Europe get ‘no human rights, no equality and it is killing refugees.’ He went saying that the migrant crisis is amplified because of ‘wars which create refugees.’ The refugees were supported by dozens of other protesters who stood on the river’s bank, waving banners reading "Freedom not Frontex". Frontex is the European Union agency responsible for securing the EU’s borders from undocumented immigration and human trafficking. EU officials have recently approved plans to use warships and reconnaissance aircraft in an attempt to stop migrant smugglers from operating in the north of Africa, specifically Libya. Libyan authorities have rejected the plan, but Brussels will reportedly continue to push the proposal as a UN resolution. Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain have already promised to deploy vessels for the mission if it goes ahead.
