Rachel Dolezal, who came under fire last week for misrepresenting her race while heading up a branch of the United States' oldest civil rights organization, has resigned as president of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the NAACP.
In a statement posted to the organization's Facebook page on Monday, Dolezal expressed disappointment that "the dialogue has unexpectedly shifted internationally to my personal identity in the context of defining race and ethnicity" while stepping down from the post.
The Spokane NAACP was set to hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday night, where Dolezal was originally slated to speak. The meeting was postponed on Sunday "due to the need to continue discussion with regional and national NAACP leaders."
