10.05.2016
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with members of the so-called 'Cuban Five' spy ring in Moscow, Tuesday.
During the meeting, Lavrov praised the spies, calling them "symbols of resistance" for Cuba. He went on to say that the 'Cuban Five' represented, "The preservation of national identity of the Cuban people and the right of your people to implement their own development model."
The 'Cuban Five' were a group of spies arrested by the USA’s Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1998. During the meeting, Lavrov stressed that Russia was one of the countries that joined the international campaign in support of your liberation and return home.
Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez were both released after they served their sentences, while the remaining three were sent to Cuba in December 2014, after Washington and Havana decided to re-establish diplomatic relations. Cuban President Raul Castro awarded all five men with the 'Hero of the Republic of Cuba' award after their release.
