The governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, called for the Confederate battle flag to be removed from the State House building in light of the Charleston killing, speaking in Columbia, Monday. Dylann Roof, a 21-year-old white male, shot nine people in the historic and predominantly black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, in a racially motivated attack. Governor Hailey said that the flag needs to be removed, as especially since the shooting the flag is a “deeply offensive symbol of a brutally offensive past.” She made the announcement surrounded by Democrats and Republicans, declaring that both parties are “here in a moment of unity”, as the flag needs to be moved “from the Capitol grounds.”
