Hundreds of Chinese soldiers paraded and exercised on the football pitches at the Shenzhen Sports Centre on Saturday, just eight miles (five kilometres) away from the border with Hong Kong.
As a game unfolded in the foreground, soldiers dressed in military uniform performed push-ups and paraded through the stadium.
They then gathered outside alongside the military vehicles which had been stationed on the complex's perimeter.
According to reports, hundreds of military vehicles were first spotted by the satellite WorldView in the area surrounding the sports centre on Monday.
On Thursday, the Chinese ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming held a press conference in which he gave an unequivocal warning to the protesters in Hong Kong, saying China would "not sit on its hands and watch" and that it had "enough solutions and enough power [...] to quell any unrest swiftly."
Demonstrators are calling for the total withdrawal of a suspended bill that would allow the extradition of the city's residents to mainland China for trials. They also want Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam to resign and the conduct of Hong Kong's police during the protests to be investigated.
