Teachers and students protested in Sao Paulo on Thursday rallying against the state government's educational reform plan. Clashes erupted outside the Palace of Bandeirantes, where the Sao Paulo State Governor Geraldo Alckmin resides. A group of masked protesters in black clothing vandalised the entrance of the palace, kicking lamps off the walls. The protesters threw missiles including stones and pieces of wood at security forces who responded with tear gas and stun grenades. According to the Sao Paulo government's educational reform programme, scheduled to come into force in 2016, each school will no longer provide all levels of education in the same building. Instead, each building will house only primary, middle or secondary classes. It is estimated that some 150 will schools will also close as a result of the proposals. Teachers and students estimate that the reform would force thousands of students to relocate and many jobs in the education sector will be lost. A new call for "do not close my school" action has been made for next week.
