British Royal Marines stormed a supertanker, Grace 1, in Gibraltar on Thursday, on suspicion of carrying Iranian crude oil to Syria in contravention of EU and US sanctions.
The tanker was reported to have sailed from Iran, a close ally of the Syrian government and was suspected to be delivered to Syria's Baniyas Refinery, in a violation of EU backed sanctions against the Baniyas refinery and US-backed sanctions against international sales of Iranian oil, following tensions between Washington and Tehran after the US withdrew from the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal earlier this year.
According to Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo both the ship and its cargo have been seized by the authorities, an action welcomed by the the UK Foreign Office.
