The Urban Guard evacuated the Sant Sebastia beach in Barcelona on Sunday after the discovery of an explosive device in the water.
The device was found three metres (10 feet) deep and 25 metres (82 feet) from the shore during a routine operation by the Civil Guard. The area was cordoned off as a precautionary measure at around 13.00 local time.
Five boats with divers from the Special Group for Underwater Activities of the Guardia Civil (GEAS) took part in the operation to locate the explosive device.
Agents from the Civil Guard, Urban Guard and Mossos d'Esquadra worked together in the search and eviction of the beach, which will remain cordoned off until Monday, when experts from the Spanish Navy will make safe the device in a controlled detonation
According to reports, the device, an aerial projectile of 1.10 metres (3.60 feet) in length and 80cm (2.62 feet) in diameter, could date back to the Spanish Civil War, although this has not been confirmed.
